Abstract

Abstract: This paper reviews the theories of face and politeness as well as the consequences of their different understanding in different cultural environments. Special emphasis is laid on Goffman’s face theory and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, which have greatly influenced research in pragmatics and intercultural communication. Research carried out in different cultural environments proves that while face and politeness are of universal nature, their realization in everyday face-to-face communication is culture specific. Due to their otherness, interlocutors from different cultures may apply different expectations which they may not be aware of. This gives rise to conflict episodes resulting in misunderstanding and threatening the face of both the speaker and listener. Contrastive analysis may offer valuable explanations for those situations
Key words: face, facework, politeness, intercultural communication, pragmatics, contrastive analysis
