Abstract
Visual standards in the planning and design of road infrastructure play a crucial role in the aesthetic,
ecological, and cultural integration of roads into the landscape. Planning new roads often neglects visual aspects
that directly affect perception, safety, and landscape sustainability. This study explores the need to establish visual
standards in road design to ensure alignment with landscape architecture principles, protection of natural
resources, and visual harmony. Through an analysis of European best practices and a comparative review, specific
visual guidelines are proposed for application in transitional countries, such as North Macedonia, aiming to provide
a framework for defining and implementing visual standards in the planning, design, and construction of new roads
based on an integrated and sustainable landscape approach.
