Abstract

The Open Balkan initiative represents a significant step toward enhanced regional cooperation and economic integration among Western Balkan countries. Also known as "Mini-Schengen," the initiative was launched by North Macedonia, Albania, and Serbia to promote the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital.
As a founding member, North Macedonia positions itself as a proactive regional actor, viewing Open Balkan as both an opportunity for deeper economic cooperation and a mechanism for improving governance, institutional infrastructure, and labor mobility.
Despite its potential, the initiative faces notable challenges, particularly limited participation from other Western Balkan countries. Nevertheless, for North Macedonia, Open Balkan remains a strategic platform for advancing national development goals and strengthening its position within the European integration process.
