Abstract

The subject of analysis in this paper is
multicultural societies and identities of their
citizens. The aim of the research is to find out what
are the key elements, used in the identification of
citizens in multicultural societies and how these
elements correspond to the characteristics by which
the societies are identified. Research has shown
that the identification of citizens in multicultural
societies differs from country to country and that it
may depend on constitutional constituent elements,
on everyday life hardships and struggles that
concern majority of the citizens. Specifically in
relation to the identification of citizens of
Macedonian society, which is taken as a case study
in this research, the results show that: the ethnic
elements-as well as the language and the symbols,
play a leading role in the identification of citizens,
the civil element commonly is used in the
declaration of belonging to the state, and in the
description of society, the citizens use more
unofficial than official elements of identification
