Abstract
Introduction: Epulis is a change in gingival tissue that occurs under the influence of chronic irritation. Histologically, there are several different types of epulis Fibrous epulis is benign tumor of gingiva that most often occurs in interdental papilla area as a result of local irritation (inadequate restorative fillings, carious teeth, subgingival deposits or the combination of them)
Objective: The aim of this paper is to present a clinical case of fibrous epulis.
Materials and methods: a 65-year-old female patient was admitted to the Clinic for Oral Surgery due to the presence of a tumor-like formation in the area of the mandibular second left premolar.
The tissue enlargement caused difficulties in performing chewing and speaking functions leading her to seek medical help.Clinical examination revealed the presence of a tumor-like lesion. The patient was treated with conservative periodontal therapy. After that,the lesion was removed with surgical scalpel under local anesthesia, along with the extraction of the tooth. A sample of gingival tissue was sent for histopathological analysis at the Institut of pathology.
Conclusion: Histopathological examination of the tissue is mandatory to determinate the definite diagnosis of fibrous epulis.
