Abstract

Hate crimes pose a significant threat to social cohesion and equality, directly undermining efforts toward sustainable development. This lecture, Hate Crimes and Social Inclusion: Addressing Inequality for Sustainable Development, explores the nature and impact of hate crimes, emphasizing the necessity of inclusive policies to foster a just society.

The session begins with an overview of hate crimes, their defining characteristics, and their profound societal consequences. It then examines the challenges in collecting reliable data, including issues related to underreporting and classification. A key focus is the geovisualization of hate crimes from 2015 to 2020, highlighting spatial patterns and trends that offer critical insights for policymakers.

Furthermore, the lecture explores the connection between hate crimes and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). It addresses the root causes of hate crimes, emphasizing the role of legislation and law enforcement in combatting bias-motivated violence. Finally, it presents social inclusion strategies as a proactive response to hate crimes, ensuring marginalized communities are protected and empowered.
