Abstract

Femicide, the killing of women because of their gender, is a pervasive and deeply troubling issue globally, including in North Macedonia. This article examines the phenomenon of femicide within the context of North Macedonia, focusing on the multifaceted interplay of sociocultural factors and legal challenges that contribute to its prevalence. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of existing literature, official reports, and qualitative data, this study explores the various dimensions of femicide in North Macedonia, including its root causes, manifestations, and impacts on individuals and society.
The analysis reveals that femicide in North Macedonia is influenced by a complex web of factors, including patriarchal attitudes, gender inequality, economic disparities, and systemic failures within the legal and judicial systems. Sociocultural norms and stereotypes spread harmful gender roles, leading to a culture of impunity that enables perpetrators to escape accountability for their actions. Moreover, structural barriers hinder access to justice and support services for victims, exacerbating the vulnerability of women and hindering efforts to prevent and address femicide effectively.
The article also discusses the limitations and gaps in current research and data collection methods related to femicide in North Macedonia, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive approaches to understanding and combating this phenomenon. Furthermore, it highlights potential paths for policy interventions and initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of femicide and promoting gender equality and women's rights in North Macedonian society.
In conclusion, this article underscores the urgent need for legal amendments, as well as intensive efforts from policymakers, law enforcement, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to tackle femicide comprehensively. By addressing the underlying sociocultural norms and systemic barriers that spread gender-based violence, North Macedonia can move towards creating a safer and more equitable society for all its citizens.
Key words: femicide, gender-based violence, crime, North Macedonia.
