Abstract

The paper presents and investigates the incidence of semantic roles of subjects in written English.
The focus is placed on the frequency of occurrence and the range of varieties of semantic subjects.
It applies comparative analysis to define differences in the use of semantic role of the subject within
a small-size corpus comprising texts that represent written English. In short, the Semantic roles of
subjects can serve as Agent, Causer, Experiencer, Patient, Instrument, Described, Located,
Anaphoric/Cataphoric It, Temporal, Locative and Event. The quantitative research method is used
to determine the frequency of occurrence of semantic roles of subjects in the selected registers in
English, namely books or fiction (FC). The purpose of the study is to find out potential differences
in the employment of different subjects in different media of language production. The paper
presents frequency counts and interprets them as indicative of the character of the discourse.
