Abstract
Language is a system of expressing thoughts that have certain phonetic and grammatical rules and serve
as a means of understanding between people.
For more than 2,000 years, language has been the subject of research and discussion, from ancient Indian, Greek,
and Roman philosophers to medieval grammarians and modern linguists of the twentieth or twenty-first century.
The oldest discussion of language is called Cratil, authored by Plato. The work is written in the form of a dialogue
between Socrates and Harmogen and Socrates and Cratila. Harmogen argues that language is the result of
convention, while Kratil believes that language originated naturally, that is, it was given by the gods. On the other
hand, Aristotle in his work "On interpretation" (De interpretation), believes that no name is given in a natural way
but it is only a symbol. During this period, special emphasis was placed on the written word, and the word
grammatike originally meant "writing skill". Modern linguists consider conventionalist and naturalistic thinking to
be unfounded.
