Abstract

Cultural heritage represents the basis for the development of cultural tourism and tourism in general, contributes to the attractiveness and recognition of the destination and represents a motive for visiting. This paper is focused on the connection between cultural heritage and tourism, with an emphasis on fortresses as part of that heritage, while an example of tourism valorization of fortresses in the border regions of North Macedonia is given. Valorization aims at understanding the current situation and the potential for forming a quality authentic tourist product that will be successfully promoted on the market. North Macedonia abounds with a large number of fortresses that date back to ancient times, and each of them has its own history and cultural significance. For the purposes of the paper, office and field researches were carried out, while different methods and techniques of data collection were applied. The tourist valorization of the fortresses is made according to a quantitative-qualitative method that is modified and composed of indicators that give a clear and objective picture of the current state of the fortresses as a potential cultural tourism product. In doing so, the weaknesses in the management of the fortresses are detected and guidelines for future investment undertakings are given. The obtained results can be used to create short-term and long-term plans for future tourism development. All of this will help in creating a tourist product that will be attractive to tourists and will contribute to enriching the tourist offer in the border regions of the country, building cross-border cooperation and local economic development.
