Abstract

Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) is a rare but potentially severe and debilitating complication of the jaw bones that may develop after treatments with antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drugs. It consists of progressive bone destruction in the maxillofacial area of patients exposed to ONJ-related medication, in the absence of a previous radiation treatment or metastasis.
Among the local risk factors, dental extraction has been described as the main trigger event in the majority of cases of reported BRONJ. However, to date, the exact prevalence of BRONJ after tooth extraction is still not well known, and several surgical protocols for dental extraction have been proposed, with different rates of ONJ onset.
