ADVANTAGES OF AUTOMATIC EDGING MACHINE IN THE PROCESS OF.pdf - Published Version Download (1MB) |
Abstract
Abstract: The advantages of edging machines are numerous in relation to the manual edging machines for optical
lenses. First, the use of automatic machines significantly improves efficiency and productivity in the production
process. The machines themselves have modern robotics and computerized controls, which enable precise shaping
and fine finishing of the optical lenses. The quality is much better unlike the one made with manual edging machine.
Human errors simply do not exist in automatic machines or is minimal. Automatic machines are easy to use by the
optometrist. With this type of machines costs are saved in several segments. Operating costs are reduced and the
profitability of the optical business is improved. The delivery time of the final product has been improved as much
as possible, and thus the number of customers has increased significantly. In recent years, the demand for highquality products has increased everywhere. The aim of this paper is to show the advantages of automatic edging
machine for the production of optical lenses in an optical laboratory by an optometrist. For this research 180 optical
lenses were used, made of different materials: mineral, plastic or Hi-index lenses. In order to achieve the purpose of
this paper, an analysis of the necessary literature was made. The information and data used in this paper are from
published scientific papers, and medical publications. The research shows that the processing time of the manual
edging machine for all three types of lenses is different. The most time is used for mineral lenses, then for high
index lenses and the least for plastic ones. The time used with semi-automatic machines is faster when processing
lenses as opposed to manual machines. The plastic lenses were processed the fastest, then the high index lenses, and
the most time was used for mineral ones. With automatic edging machines, plastic lenses are processed the fastest,
followed by lenses with high index and finally mineral lenses. The best quality of edging optical lenses has
automated machine, followed by semi-automatic edging machine and generally there is no difference what type of
lenses is being processed, and finally there is the manual machine. The best edge polishing is with automatic
machines and semi-automated machines. The best and precise centering is with automatic and semi-automated
machines, problem may occur only if the machine needs servicing. As technology goes further, edging machines are
expected to advance even more, they are expected to be more precise, efficient and reliable. On the question does it
pay to invest in a new generation automatic edging machines this study data clearly shows that working with such
machine greatly advances productivity, saves time and cost as well as they provide capability of increasing the
production volume. Implementation and use of automatic edging machines significantly increases safety of the
optometrist that is operating it, the safety is on higher level, dangerous moving parts of the machine are enclosed and
well protected thus providing safe work environment. Every modern optometric laboratory should have a quality
automatic edging machine that will take the laboratory performance to the next level.
