Abstract
Abstract: Learning a foreign language is a complex process which involves the acquisition of several types of competences which will enable learners to use the language successfully in various situations. One of these competences is the linguistic competence. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the size, range and control of vocabulary are the main parameters for the acquisition of the language, determining the level of language competence and planning the instruction. This paper discusses the different approaches to defining lexical knowledge and the models of lexical competence, emphasizes the complexity of vocabulary acquisition and its importance for the development of communicative competence and stresses the need of devoting more time and attention to the acquisition of vocabulary in language teaching.
