Abstract

Rice cultivated in Kocani is the first protected product in Republic of North Macedonia with a mark of origin and is an export-oriented product, recognizable in traditional foreign markets. Statistical data show that, compared to the past period, the yield of rice paddy per hectare is decreasing from year to year, and the yield of white rice from processed rice paddy is also decreasing. As one of the most significant factors, which affects the improvement of the yield of white rice from processed paddy and its quality, is the moisture content of the paddy at harvest and the way of drying the paddy after harvest. The influence of the method of drying the paddy after harvest in these trials was analyzed on different varieties of rice paddy. The moisture content in paddy was measured immediately after the harvest of the paddy, and then two methods of drying the paddy were applied, extensive (in the sun) and in a special dryer. The results of the researches showed that in all varieties, after drying the paddy, the yield percentage of white rice increases, and drying in a special dryer gives a better yield compared to conventional drying. We all know that in our country only the buyers own such dryers in order to enable safe storage of the rice paddy, the producers are forced to carry out extensive drying of the crop or to postpone the harvest until the fall of frost, which further reduces the yield of white rice. Based on these researches and the facts from the successful results provided by the IPARD funds so far in the direction of the renewal of agricultural mechanization, we emphasize that the Ministry of Agriculture of North Macedonia, through these IPARD funds and the purchase of special dryers with a smaller capacity for drying the rice paddy, can significantly contributed to more sustainable domestic rice production.
