Abstract

The study of the 5th goal for sustainable development is of particular importance because it advocates the achievement of gender equality. The way to achieve this goal is by ending all forms of discrimination, violence and any harmful practices against women and girls in the public and private spheres. Also, SDG 5 calls for women's full participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of political and economic decision-making.
Gender-based violence in the world is an obstacle to global progress and entails significant costs for the economies of developing countries. In 2015, the United Nations agreed on an ambitious set of new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals. Among them is the mentioned goal which unequivocally points to the fact that women and girls, everywhere, must have equal rights and opportunities and be able to live without violence and discrimination. Eliminating gender-based violence is a priority, considering that this is one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world today. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in our world today. It is a major obstacle to the fulfilment of the human rights of women and girls and to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is happening all over the world, spanning all generations, nationalities, communities, and sectors of our societies, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability or other background.
We dedicate in studying this goal precisely for the reason of emphasizing the importance of eradicating this evil and achieving the long-desired equality, but also to point out its importance by emphasizing the dependence of the other goals on the fulfilment of this one.
