Abstract

The project detailed in this proposal seeks to identify, classify and explain features of Macedonian English interlanguage i.e. the English language spoken by English learners in the Republic of Macedonia. For this purpose, the analysis will be carried out in two stages: a) gathering and electronic data processing of learner samples as well as summarising theoretical research findings, and b) detailed analysis of the corpus by selecting a language structure at a certain level, its description, classification of typical errors and their explanation with special emphasis on cross-linguistic influences between English and Macedonian. The data analysis will be performed on phonetic-phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic and discourse level..
Special attention will be given to the methodology used for the creation of the electronic corpus in an attempt to: a) achieve easier and more precise data analysis for the purposes of this project, and b) allow for its wider application in similar studies including other foreign languages studied in the RM.
One of the goals of this project is to bridge the gap between research and teaching by conducting an analysis based on the theoretical findings but using a modern empirical method such as an electronic database (a corpus of oral and written samples). The results will be summarised in a practical manual. The manual will be of use not only to English language teachers for improving their teaching methods but it will also be helpful to translators and others who use English for professional communication. In addition, higher research standards will be adopted in linguistic research in the Republic of Macedonia and a local network of experts will be created thus strengthening professional cooperation
