Abstract

The chapter offers a deep understanding of factors that are operative within tourism development in North Macedonia with regard to the economic regional environment. It develops a thorough understanding of tourism in North Macedonia by involving the collection of multiple sources of evidence and using a range of quantitative analyses. An attempt is made to explain the role of tourism in regional development and growth and its empirical application. New insights are provided as a comparison to selected countries of South and Mediterranean Europe, with an accent on the neighboring countries. Two major research questions are addressed: (1) The nature of tourism in the broader regional economic growth, and (2) The role of tourism in the economic development of North Macedonia. Finally, the discussion focused on stronger integration between the neighbouring countries in the region.
