Abstract

Halitosis is a widely spread condition and it is with microbial metabolism on the tongue and in the saliva
and dental plaque. Fixed orthodontic appliances can increase plaque accumulation, so it can cause
halitosis.
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of fixed orthodontic appliances on the occurrence of halitosis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Mаterial and method: 20 orthodontic patients with Angle Class I malocclusions undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment formed the study group. Examination included patient self-evaluation about halitosis,
plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI) and tongue coating index (TCI). All of the patients were monitored
in three time points after setting up of orthodontic appliance (immediately after, one month after and six
months after setting up of the appliance).
Results: Self-perceived halitosis was significantly increased among patients with fixed orthodontic appliances during treatment (p<.05). Increases were also were noted in all indices (PI, GI, and TCI) during
treatment (p<.05). But it must be noted that, TCI had showed statistically significant difference between
T1 and T2 (p<.05) and between T1 and T3 (p<.05).
Conclusion: Our results showed positive association between halitosis and fixed orthodontic appliances. So, it can be concluded that halitosis can be noted as an indicator of oral health during orthodontic
treatment.
