Abstract

This paper highlights some challenges for educational institutions in North Macedonia during COVID-
19 pandemic and their implications for learning and assessment practices. The current dominant mode
of education is the traditional place-based classroom with some types of blended/hybrid learning on
some of the universities.
Teachers were confronted with the needs to rapidly change their practices due to distance learning and
to develop new approaches to monitor students’ learning and achievements. Online learning does not
provide mechanisms for feedback and corrections from professors that in engineering disciplines are
necessary. In this study, we explore the teaching problems in the areas of architecture and civil
engineering, especially in the field of descriptive geometry in 2D and 3D modelling.
The acquisition of this knowledge can hardly be accomplished by self-studying or only through
theoretical learning, without practical exercises. We investigated online learning methods for supporting
the students to complete their course projects.
The paper includes the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) or Challenges
(SWOC) analysis of the process of online learning during the time of the pandemic. A comparison
between student’s results before COVID-19 time and after is made, too.
