Abstract
REALISATION OF THE SPEECH ACT OF REFUSING A REQUEST BY
THE STUDENTS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF TURKISH LANGUAGE
AND LITERATURE
The research on the speech act of refusing a request presented in this paper was
carried out at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Faculty of
Philology, Goce Delcev University-Stip. All participants were students at the
Department of Turkish Language and Literature. Some of them were Turks from
Macedonia, others were Macedonians and Torbeshi who study Turkish language and
literature together in the same class. The conversations that were subject to analysis
were collected through role plays as a method that provides data on spoken language
through uncontrolled and spontaneous speech situations by respondents. Refusals
made by the participants were coded according to the semantic formulas adapted from
Blum-Kulka, House, &. Kasper (1989). The analysis of refusal data in Turkish
showed that the participants relied not only on one type of head act. They employed
a range od refusal strategies among which reason/explanation of proposition is the
most frequent strategy.
