Abstract

The project described in this paper Macedonian Corpus of Learner English and German(MACOR)is designed to provide better conditions for researchers, university language students, teachers and other educators in the Republic of North Macedonia. TheMacedonian system of higher education is often criticized for its traditional methods of teaching, slow implementation of any changes and unmotivated students. In order to address this weakness, the Faculty of Philology at Goce Delchev University in Shtip, Republic of North Macedonia, in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Science at the same University, has set to create a Macedonian Corpus of Learner English and German. Learner corpora are electronic collections of texts produced by language learners. Interest for them is growing fast in the second language acquisition and foreign language teaching communities because they provide an innovative and unique methodology for empirical research with theoretical and practical implications that can be used by researchers, university language students, teachers and other educators.MACOR consists of three sections: 1) learner English subcorpus; 2) learner German subcorpus; and 3) native Macedonian subcorpus. All three sections contain materials produced in response to similar tasks and in similar conditions. The native Macedonian subcorpus will provide conditions for studying the influence of the mother tongue in the process of learning a foreign language. The experiences received with the work on this project will be disseminated through several forms: publications describing the project and the corpus, including a user’s manual; training workshops for researchers, teachers, students and other educators in several parts of the Republic of North Macedonia (Shtp, Tetovo, Bitola, Ohrid) as well as presentations at conferences and publications in relevant journals. This article has attempted to present the forms of addressing and greeting in German and Macedonian, which were of interest for our analysis in the described corpus. The forms of greetings that were presented in our analysis show that the Macedonian learners of German used most often in informal situations expressions, such as: Hallo/Hi, wie geht es (geht’s) dir ?, Hallo + Name, Hi, etc.,and in formal situations they used expressions such as:Guten Tag;Hallo, guten Tag;Hallo Herr / Frau + Name ... etc.We hope that this corpus will arouse interest in publishing research papers and will spark interest in developing seminar papers, bachelor, and master theses among students, and it will arouse interest in expanding, actualizing, and popularizing deeper corpus research in the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as in research of other elements of this speech act in contrastive language analysis.
