Abstract

The inevitable presence of various metal ions in all systems is of outmost importance, since many of them are responsible for proper functioning of all living systems. The functioning of ion transfer across biological membranes is enabled mainly from the presence of Na+/K+ cations that regulate the so-called "membrane potential" of the cells. As cations of some transient metals act as Co-factors in many enzymes (like the cations of Fe, Mo, Zn, Cu) many other cations of transient metals, as those of mercury, lead and cadmium are toxic. Moreover, food products and water quality relies on presence/absence of many cations. In this lecture, we report on a simple approach of systematic analysis of cations, while we also present a voltammetric methodology to quantify some of the cations of transient metals. This lecture is suitable for the course of Analytical Chemistry to the students enrolled in Pharmacy and Chemistry studies.
