Abstract
The influx of migrants, and the migrant crisis in general, that engulfed entire Europe, did not pass Macedonia, as a, firstly, transit country for the migrant movements. Мigrants see the Balkan countries as a gateway to the European Union countries. But their “journey”, before, and mostly after Western Balkan route was closed, was no crime free. Western Balkan route was used by hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees traveling from Greece to Northern Europe. It has been closed since March 8, 2016. According to official data from the countries along the route, nearly one million people have passed over the two-year period. Macedonia, like other countries on the route, had no plan to respond to the crisis. The EU-Turkey refugee readmission agreement and standardized registration of migrants along the Western Balkan route, as well as joint patrols on the Macedonian-Greek border, are just part of the EU's joint efforts to deal with the crisis. But, these crises were followed by the frequent occurrence of crimes committed by migrants (towards another migrant, towards domestic population, towards the state and also crimes that means helping the domestic offenders committing crime related with migrants) and also towards them committed by our citizens, mostly crimes against humanity and international law. The list is long, but our focus is primarily on organized crimes that means flagrant violation of human rights.
In the following lecture, we will learn to distinguish the types of crimes committed on the territory of Macedonia, as a transit country, especially after 2016, and we will try to make a criminological analysis of the severest crimes among all – human trafficking and smuggling of migrants. Also, we will make a case study on some of them occurred 2016 and 2019. In the period, the Macedonian police has been working together with police officers from other partner countries working on securing the Macedonian-Greek border, and have established special forces working to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking. This is also one of the topics that will be covered during the lecture, in order to determine how and howmuch the state cooperates with the EU countries and the countries of the region, for preventing and combating the aforementioned crimes.
