Abstract
Privacy denotes the intimate part of an individual's life, a state of peace, unobstructed, peacefulness. Privacy is not a legal term, but it is an understanding of that part of human life that should remain the sovereign right of the individual, how and in what way they will dispose of their intimacy, their personal information, their secrets and their inner world. By private life we mean that sphere of our life in which we are not dependent on institutions, rules or on any moral acceptability. However, man is a social being, participates in public life, enters into relationships, becomes available to others. Every human being is a unique living being, with his or her personal biological characteristics, but also with socially recognizable individual traits that set him apart from others: name, surname, date of birth, identification number, blood type, address, telephone number, credit card number – those are personal information that belongs to each individual's identity. At different stages of development of civilisation and humanity, privacy and personal information had different social treatment and value. This paper presents a chronology of social and legal understandings and regulation of human rights to privacy and the protection of personal data, from ancient Rome to modern European states and societies.
