Abstract
Background: Despite the increased popularity of dental implants, conventional crowns and dental bridges are fabricated very often in everyday dental practice. The goal of this study was to recognize the frequency of complications as well as causes and types of most common complications associated with single crowns and dental bridges.
Methods and materials: Forty private dental offices from various parts of Macedonia were included in this study. In order to collect information from the dentists a specific self-reported questionnaire was comprised in the study. The data analyses were based on the respondents in the questionnaires and calculated using Statistical software SPSS for Windows version 23. A p-value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
Results: The biggest incidence of clinical complications was associated with dental bridges (55%), followed by conventional single crowns (20%) and all-ceramic crowns (15%). The lowest incidence was registered in patients with Maryland bridges (10%). The most common complications associated with single crowns were the need of endodontic treatment (45%), porcelain veneer fracture (20%), loss of retention and periodontal disease (15%) and caries of abutments (5%). The most common complications reported in dental bridges were loos of retention (35%), followed by the need of endodontic treatment of the abutment (30%) and caries (5%).
Conclusion: Comprehension of these factors will improve the clinician's ability to plan the most suitable treatment, provide patients with realistic expectations and to formulate an appropriate maintenance plan for patients with fixed prostheses.
