Abstract

Pain is an unpleasant sensation and emotional experience caused by injury (damage) of the tissues in the human body or because of present illness. The perception of pain is part of the defensive functions of the organism. Pain is a warning of the danger of damage to the integrity of the tissues causing adequate defense reaction. According to the World Health Organization about 9 million people in the world suffer from cancer pain and 70-90% of patients in the terminal phase have frequent or constant pain while in the early stages severe pain occurs in 40-50% of patients. In 80% of patients with cancer pain there is not appropriate anelgetic therapy. The reasons for such inadequate treatment are : insufficient knowledge of anelgetics, fear of dependence and fear of respiratory depression.
