Abstract

Children are prone to high rates of antibiotic use due to greater frequency of respiratory tract infections, and
concerns about possible complications. Recent studies raised awareness of high resistance levels and
inappropriate antibiotic use, including OTC sales of antibiotics across South-Eastern Europe. Nation-wide
multifaceted interventions to improve antibiotic use were undertaken in FYR Macedonia in September 2014. This
study aimed to assess the parental knowledge and attitudes about antibiotics, and self-medication practices in children, and evaluate the impact of interventions on these parameters.
