Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine antimicrobial effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite to the infected root canals during conventional and ultrasound instrumentation technique.
A total of 60 single-rooted gangrenous teeth were used for this study, randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 teeth. In the first and second group the sodium hipohlorite was used as irrigans during root canal instrumentation. The groups differed according to the type of instrumentation being used: in the first group it was conventional, and ultrasound energizing in the second. During instrumentation the saline solution has been used for irrigation of 30 teeth. The instrumentation of root canals was conventional in the third group, and ultrasound energizing in the fourth group. The samples for microbiological analysis were taken twice: immediately after access opening and 24 hour after root canals biomechanical instrumentation. Microbiological status assessment with standard technique at the Institute of Microbiology at the Medical faculty was performed.
Results showed significant quantitative and qualitative bacterial reducing when sodium hypochlorite was used during root canal instrumentation, especially of obligate anaerobe species. There was no influence of different instrumentation technique in reduction of infection.
