Abstract

Abstract: In the course of their lives, people acquire a large number of words. According to some estimates, native English speakers with completed secondary education know around 20.000 word families, or 32.000 lexical units. According to other estimates, this number is much higher, and could be well over 50.000. These figures and the fact that words are retrieved in one fifth of a second indicate extremely good organization of the mental lexicon. Researchers have been trying to discover the secrets of the mind and the organization and functioning of the mental lexicon, but a great deal of it is still a mystery. This paper discusses the investigations of the mental lexicon and the metaphors that are used to describe the content and organization of the mental lexicon.

Key words: mental lexicon, metaphors, word associations, slips of the tongue, bilingualism.
