Abstract

This article was motivated by the importance of pragmatic markers in conversation and their wide coverage in present-day research. Its aim is twofold. First, it reviews literature on pragmatic markers. In particular it discusses their definition, classification, functions, main features and theoretical frameworks by referring to major studies in this field. The paper also addresses points that cause confusion in the study of pragmatic markers, such as word class membership, terminological uncertainty, multifunctionality and domains of functioning. Second, it aims to encourage research on pragmatic markers in Macedonian, cross-cultural research of pragmatic markers in Macedonian and other languages as well as their research in the interlanguage of Macedonian learners of foreign languages. The article provides a useful bibliography of the studies of pragmatic markers in general and of individual pragmatic markers, as well as of cross-cultural and interlanguage studies of pragmatic markers. It also mentions several studies in the field of South Slavic languages.

Key words: core meaning, procedural meaning, indexical function, rhetorical function, multifunctionality.
