Abstract

Our research covers the custom “pogazejki”, as an integral part of the wedding ceremony and the songs which are sung during this custom. According to the traditional model, the custom “pogazejki” takes place on Monday, the next day after the main wedding ceremony. This work contains the entire flow of this tradition, which is in direct connotation to the bride’s virginity and has an impact on the future life of the bride and the groom. The music records which are enclosed to this paper recapture the tunes and the lyrics of the songs which were created as a reflection of the events that accompanied this custom. The songs, which are performed during this custom, are constantly re-created and re-produced by the performers, the custom’s participants. Analyzing the songs, we came to a conclusion that certain parts of the songs were built up on the same or similar melodies with different lyrics, which adds to the fact that the folklore genius found it easier to write lyrics than music. The poetical part is full of jokes and vulgar words, related to the bride and the groom, their parents, close relatives, the godfather and others.
