Abstract

"Contrastive Analysis of English and Macedonian: Language Workbook" is a collection of exercises which are closely related to the course book “Contrastive Analysis of English and Macedonian”. Its aim is to raise students’ awareness of similarities and differences between English and Macedonian and to shed light on some occurrences in the fields related to the students’ future professions: teaching English as a foreign language and translation.
This Language Workbook contains 11 chapters with exercises in correlation with the topics presented in the course book: 1 Introduction to Contrastive Analysis 2 Historical Overview and Development of Contrastive Analysis 3 The Role of the Native Language: Language Transfer 4 Verbs of Love and Hate in English and in Macedonian 5 The English Verb Seem and Its Correspondences in Macedonian 6 Modal Verbs in English and in Macedonian 7 Aspect in English and Macedonian 8 Transfer in Interpretation and Production of Idiomatic Expressions 9 Multi-word Lexical Verbs 10 Borrowing from English and 11 Contrastive Pragmatics.
The following types of exercises are included: lead-ins, comprehension and terminology exercises; corpus exercises; translation exercises; contrasting and comparing exercises; designing small-scale research; writing summaries and essays; discussions, etc.
The aim of the nine appendices at the back of the book is to encourage students’ independence. They will train them to read papers on contrastive analysis topics, design instruments for conducting research, conduct research and summarize the results of their research.
