Abstract

The coursebook Contrastive Analysis of English and Macedonian was prepared with three objectives in mind:
1. To raise students’ awareness of the differences and similarities between English and Macedonian
2. To train teacher students how to apply Contrastive Analysis in their teaching English as a foreign language
3. To train translator students how to apply Contrastive Analysis in their translation work.
This book focuses on differences and similarities between English and Macedonian. It is divided in two parts. Part One includes chapters on what Contrastive Analysis is, its historical development, its relationship with other linguistic disciplines and the role of the mother tongue (transfer). Part Two deals with different language aspects and discusses how they are expressed in English and Macedonian, tracing the similarities and differences between the two languages. The topics discussed include issues in the fields of morphology, lexicology, syntax, and pragmatics.
Contrastive Analysis of English and Macedonian is relevant for both teachers and translators. For teachers, it offers explanations about the language behavior of their students; for translators, it offers opportunity to explore different translation options, thus developing their sensitivity to language issues.
