Abstract

In summary, this study has shown that heavy metals can induce antioxidant stress and DNA damage. Antioxidative system of M. recutita seems to be inducible by environmentally encountered heavy metals concentrations. Balance of different levels of plant metabolism is essential for eliminating toxic effects of metals and maintaining of structural and metabolic integrity. Thus, oxidative stress characterized by increased production of ROS could be an important mechanism of metal toxicity, though extensive research is yet needed at the molecular and subcellular levels in order to get a deeper insight into metal toxicity.
