Abstract

We present analysis of linear and nonlinear strains (rotations and drifts) in a uniform shear beam subjected to a strong-motion pulse at its base. We describe the dependence of the computed strains on the amplitude and duration of the wave pulse and on the material properties
of the shear beam. Our results should provide a useful elementary background that can serve to help further understanding of the advantages of the displacement
-based design and of the power design method.
