Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to reveal the therapy of symptomatic apical periodontitis and to show the results.
Materials and methods: For that purpose of this study, endodontic therapy was performed on 10 patients, aged between 20 and 55 years, with signs of symptomatic apical periodontitis (e.g. acute and chronic exacerbation apical paradontitis). At the first appointment the remnants of pulp tissues were removed, the drainage was obtained for or the antibiotic were prescribed in cases were it was not. Endodontic therapy was completed during the second appointment, when the calcium hydroxide- paste was applied as temporary filling. In third appointment the root canals were sealed and the teeth were restored. The patients were recalled for clinical and radiographic evaluation monthly for 3 months.
Results: Out of ten, in nine cases the drainage was obtained successfully and in three cases antibiotic therapy was prescribed. The pain relieved in eight cases for 24 hours and in two cases for 48 hours. The therapy was claimed to be successful when the patients were symptomless, there were no tenderness sensitivity, radiographic signs slowly disappeared and the treated teeth were functional.
Conclusion: The therapy of symptomatic apical periodontitis have very high overall successful rate. It should not be indication for periapical surgery or teeth extraction, because the conventional endodontic therapy could preserve the tooth and its functionality.
