Abstract

In the theory of literature, the functions of literary and artistic works are generally described in compliance with Horatio’s credo dolce and utile (pleasant and useful), which means that a literary-artistic work should simultaneously instigate aesthetic pleasure and be edifying. Its educational features should not be considered as an obligation to be fulfilled or a lesson to be learned, but simply as an aesthetic gravity of observation.
When we say that literature is a game, a spontaneous entertainment, we feel that injustice has been committed both to the artist, his skill and imagination and to the significance and importance of every literary work. When we say that literature is a craft or skill we feel that its aesthetic essence is deliberately neglected. Therefore, when describing the literary functions we must have an equal and just attitude for both dolce and utile.
Considering the complex nature of the literary and artistic works, as well as the seriousness of the mission – education, we made efforts in our research to observe whether the home reading books are in accord both with the aims and basic notions defined in the Macedonian language curricula and the age of the public for which it is intended. We also tried to provide a theoretical basis for the pedagogical science, developmental psychology, as well as for the methodology of literary research. Of exceptional importance are the results gained from the comparative analysis of the Macedonian language curricula for grades VII, VIII and IX and Croatian language curricula for grades VI, VII and VIII in the section Literature and Home Reading and the results of the research on the teachers’ and pupils’ opinion on the listed books in the primary schools in the Republic of Macedonia.
It may be concluded that the knowledge on literature refers to: knowledge of the basic notions of the theory of literature, history of literature and the most significant world and national literary-artistic works comprehensible to the pupils. In order to encourage the pupils’ proper development of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities for individual critical reading of literary works, we shall, based on our research, give recommendations for adjusting the home reading books with the Macedonian language curricula, the pupils’ age and the literary-aesthetic challenge that this works trigger with the young people.
