Abstract

The concept of the nation linked to the state, characteristic of the 18th century Europe, has changed a lot. States with powerful economies nowadays are not single nation states. The question of the language, especially the official language, cannot be viewed out of the social context. These days, the world is often qualified as “a global village” in which modern standard languages are in need of language policy and language planning, which involve both scientific and social activities. This paper discusses some concepts related to these two disciplines, such as language status and language culture. It is also pointed out that standard languages are currently faced with similar problems.
