Abstract

This handbook for English language students presents the major teaching methods and approaches that have been used in English language teaching and learning. It is divided into two parts. Part I gives an overview of first and second/foreign language acquisition theories, such as the behaviourist, the innatist, the cognitive, the interactionist and the creative-construction theory. Part II describes the English language teaching methods and approaches that have been popular at different times since the end of the 19th century including the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Method, the Audiolingual Method, Total Physical Response, the Silent Way, Suggestopedia, Community Language Learning, Communicative Language Teaching, Task-based Learning, the Natural Approach and Cooperative Language Learning.
