Abstract

Topics in Contrastive Analysis: English and Macedonian covers a wide range of topics and is related to several fields of study. The aim of this book, however, is not to exhaust all aspects that Contrastive analysis is concerned with nor to provide a comprehensive comparison of English and Macedonian. In composing the book, I have been motivated by the practical purposes of Contrastive analysis. When we contrast and compare languages, we do it for a purpose: we want to get useful insights concerning other fields of study. I was primarily interested in it from the point of foreign language learning and teaching, translation, and corpus linguistics. Students are assumed to have some previous knowledge of English and Macedonian linguistics. Each topic is carefully approached and its theoretical grounds are first discussed. This helps students fill in some of the gaps in their knowledge.
This book focuses on differences and similarities between English and Macedonian. It is divided into two parts. Part One includes chapters on what Contrastive analysis is, its characteristics, historical development, relationship with other linguistic disciplines, and the methods it uses. Part Two deals with specific language aspects and discusses how they are expressed in English and Macedonian, tracing the similarities and differences between the two languages. The topics discussed include issues in the fields of phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, and pragmatics. They were selected based on students’ interests. The book was written with a one-semester course in mind. However, with the addition of some supplementary materials and project work, it could be used for two semesters. Topics in Contrastive Analysis: English and Macedonian is relevant for both teachers and translators. For teachers, it offers explanations about the language behavior of their students; for translators, it offers the opportunity to explore different translation options, thus developing their sensitivity to language issues.
