Abstract

The acid-base equilibria are very important systems to understand many functions of physiologically relevant compounds such as amino acids, phenols, amines and many more. We give in this lecture a detailed insight into the evaluation of formulas relevant to get access to dissociation constants of mono- and di-protonic weak acids, and of the weak bases that can accept one or two protons. Equations are given that enable estimation of a molar concentration of given weak acid and base, by measuring only the pH of the water solution in which a weak acid or base is dissolved. The evaluated equations might help in estimating the mass of single active compounds in many drugs that are considered as weak monoprotic acids and for the weak bases that can accept one proton in reactions in water media. Hints are given for the estimation of concentration of relevant fractions for the diprotic acids, too.
