Abstract

“One of the main priorities in the agendas of the Western Balkan (WB) countries is to become an EU member state. On their road toward this clear goal there are many obstacles that should be surpassed and many reforms that should be implemented. In these processes, one of the main roles in shaping tomorrow’ society in their countries and furthering EU integration is that of the students, especially of the highly educated students and of those who have lived and studied abroad and who have taken advantage of the possibility to gain the knowledge needed for provoking the reform process, the institution building and the economic development in their home countries.
However, a permanent democratic development toward the EU integration requires experienced young people in EU affairs, EU law, sustainable development etc. Taking this in consideration, one of the important steps for the Western Balkan countries on their road to further EU integration is the student mobility, the teacher exchanges, the visa facilitation and other policies regarding admission. But, the researches done on the student mobility issues in the WB show that the students from these countries have almost never traveled in the EU neither have studied there.
The statistics show that the Western Balkan students represent less than 3% of all foreign students studying at EU universities.

The visa problem is very often pointed out, but it is not the only reason. The following reasons are important as well:
- Limited information
- Lack of cooperation between universities
- High costs of studying
- Insufficient exchange opportunities among WB and EU universities
The lack of knowledge about studying possibilities abroad can also be explained by the very low level of activities or absence of international offices at the universities in the WB. Therefore, most of the information students have is the one they gather on the Internet, from friends or families or students who have already studied abroad.
Macedonia is exempted from this mentioned research on student mobility despite the fact that here as well, there are students uninformed about the possibilities for studying abroad.
Consequently, the State University “Goce Delcev” of Stip submits this project in order to promote the studying possibilities among its 5000 students as well as some activities which will include any interested student from the other universities in the country”.

Short description of the realized activities:
- Workshops for tutorials on filling in an application form, writing the most appropriate Letter of motivation, interview for a scholarship, the adequate language certificate;
- Presentations for open calls for scholarships which will be held from official representatives of the Embassies and Consulates in Republic of Macedonia;
- -organized trip for the “Days of Education” event in Skopje for 18 students from UGD, as well as a visit to the British Center in Skopje, RM where a presentation for scholarships was being held;
- “Best practice” sessions for the students;
- “Alumni hours” for the graduated students interested in continuing their education abroad;
- Publishing a booklet ( which will contain information about scholarships, and stories of experience of the alumni)
