Abstract

The region of Veles, like the part of ethnic region
of Azot had a unique form of living spaces that represent
part of the building inheritance in this region.
The economic conditions of the settlements where
created according to the conditions of the development
of buildings, and with the use of the local materials.
The most dominant model of a home was built
by having two floors, with an open plan, a balcony-
known as čardak-čardaklija that satisfied therequirements
of the family.The interior of the home was
modest withembellishments,mainly some decorative
forms wereused for the fireplace,cupboards, and the
decoration of the ceilings. Minimal decoration was
applied in the exterior,like the fence, some elements
on the balcony-čardak, and the windows.
The model home with a balcony-čardaklija was
the most used model not only on our territory, but
wider on the Balkan Peninsula.
For the building of the housesin this region customs
and belief continued to exist, from the commencing
of the home, giving sacrifice, customs for
the process of the building, the finishing of the roof
construction, and the entering into the new home.
These customs are similar in form for the other ethnic
communities from the surroundings,however with
different terminology.
The building heritage from the 19th century and
the beginning of the 20th century in the region of
Veles developed their own local characteristics, folk
traditions, thus giving a place in the rich fund of rural
settlements in the country.
