Abstract

SE Europe is relatively densely populated, especially in the Neogene basins where large urban centers are mainly located. The issues referring to the quality of life in urban settlements in South East Europe, were the main reason for initiating such a project (urban risk, quality of urban environment, industrial impacts, environmental elements, industrial and municipal waste landfills, etc.). The effects of military activities in the area during the last century and the beginning of this century were also analyzed. Production of energy and metals in Southeast Europe and the resulting effects that have impact on the urban environment, were also subject of study within this project. The activities within the Project were designed in a way that will help resolve many issues related to anthropogenic impacts on the environment in Southeast Europe, giving priority to the cooperation within the project with a number of research workers and research centers in countries Southeast Europe.
Studies involved use of modern analytical methodologies, such as determination of heavy and toxic metals in some geochemical environments (water, air, soil, plant products, the human population) using ICP-AES, ICP-MS, INAA, AAS, MS and other methods. Efforts were made to give an answer to the manner (form) of occurrence of some heavy and toxic metals (Scaning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, etc..). Investigations related to the effects of depleted uranium in the environment that came as a consequence of military actions in the beginning of the century, in the former Yugoslavia, were conducted on ICP-AES, ICP-MS and on TIMS.
