Abstract

Financial crises have had a significant impact on the historical develop-ment of financial systems. Stable banking system are an important component of well-functioning financial system. During the last 25 years a number of developed economies, developing countries, and economies in transition experienced severe banking crises. Banks can fail because of their insolvency, or aggregate ahortage of liquidity can make them insolvent. Emerging market financial sys-tems have proved to be less resilient than the banking syatems of developed countries. Policymakers have responded to banking crises with various interventions. One of the most important consequences of the banking crises in the emerging economies has been changes in the structure of bank ownership.
