Abstract

Introduction: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal serum protein synthesized in the liver and the visceral endoderm from the gallbladder of the fetus, or other parts of its gastrointestinal tract. AFP has the ability to pass through the placenta and fetal circulation in the mother's blood. During pregnancy, its concentration increases, compared with the days after birth when its concentration drastically decrease. For this reason, the concentration of AFP in maternal serum (MSAFP) is an important diagnostic biomarker in prenatal screening of a number of abnormalities in the fetus (defects in the neural tube, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and other chromosomal abnormalities). Malignant cells of primary liver cancer as well as embryonic testicular and ovarian tumors also intensively synthetize AFP. For these reasons, AFP is an important diagnostic tumor marker for liver cancer, testicular cancer, cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis. Monitoring of AFP values allows monitoring of treatment and therapy in these diseases. The aim of the study: To indicate the role and significance of AFP as a potential diagnostic biomarker, as well as the importance of this value in the treatment and therapy of certain diseases. Material and Methods: The observation of various biomarkers such as AFP in laboratory diagnostics and practice is of great importance in the screening and diagnosis of various diseases and before the onset of the first symptoms. Any deviation from the reference values of this biomarker in various body fluids and in different organisms, points to possible pathophysiological changes in certain tissues and organs. Conclusions: The current published papers on the importance and significance of AFP confirm that determining the concentration of AFP is not only an important diagnostic biomarker but also an important value that monitors the success of the therapy and treatment on the patients.
