Abstract

This paper discusses the learning strategies in Foreign Language Acquisition. The authors begin with an introduction of the general features of the learning strategies and argue their significance in the process of foreign language learning. In foreign language teaching methodology the learning strategies are still a subject of debate and their significance is emphasized from the viewpoint of many scientists on the field along with the recommendation of different classifications. This paper presents the classification of Rebecca Oxford according to which the foreign language learning strategies regardless of the learners’ mother tongue are divided into two main groups: direct and indirect strategies. Firstly the direct strategies (memory, cognitive and compensation) are analyzed which imply a direct usage of the target language. These strategies are used consciously by the learners. Next the influence of the indirect strategies (metacognitive, affective and social) over the process of foreign language learning is discussed, where the learner’s role is being emphasized. Using these strategies the learners gradually acquire the target language, accept their own mistakes and attempt to overcome the difficulties. Additionally the authors provide an overview of the strategies used in acquisition of proper foreign language pronunciation, i.e. correct oral production. Certain researchers accentuate that there are several important strategies in teaching proper pronunciation which can be of a great help to the learners in the process of foreign language acquisition. Additionally the paper represents guidelines that should be taken into consideration by the language instructors in order to gain proper oral production. It is also pointed out that the instructors need to help the learners to develop positive attitudes towards the proper pronunciation, to identify the specific speech functions which is a problem among learners, to focus the development of the communicative competence and introduce the learners with the prosodic features of the language i.e. accent, intonation, rhythm etc. Finally in the paper it is pointed out about the constant necessity for development of further techniques in class which would contribute to the acquisition of proper pronunciation.
