Diabetes mellitus - type 1, formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes mellitus occurs in the absence of insulin resulting from the destruction of B cells of Langerhans pancreatic islands which produce insulin. Because in the absence of insulin develop ketoacidosis, external administration of insulin is necessary to maintain homeostasis in patients with Juvenile diabetes. The cases are more common in children and adolescents, but it can occur at any age. The most commonly is diagnosed about 3-6 years of age or in their early teens. By type 1 sufferers around 10% of the total number of patients with diabetes mellitus.
