Abstract

English Syntax and Discourse: Language Workbook is a collection of exercises created with the aim of supporting the topics studied as a part of the English Syntax 2 course. This course is a continuation of the English Syntax 1 course and takes students to a new level of language analysis. The course objectives are as follows:
1. To deepen students’ knowledge about syntactic structures in English language;
2. To put syntax in connection with semantics and pragmatics;
3. To enable students to identify the semantic roles of the syntactic structures and their functions in relation to the context and their pragmatic functions;
4. To orient students towards linguistic research.
The main purpose of the course is to make students aware of the different meanings that syntactic structures convey, thus understanding the richness and complexity of the English language system. Grammatical constructions are discussed in terms of their form, meaning, and functions in discourse. As students are expected to be familiar with the form of the grammatical constructions, special attention is paid to their meaning in discourse. Students are encouraged to discuss ambiguity, variations, and new trends in English language.
